Bikes, a cargo box, even a full-size spare. Swing it all aside and open the back doors.

The KUAT Pivot XD is Kuat's heavy-duty swing-away hitch. It slides into your 2-inch receiver, your bike rack or cargo carrier slides into the Pivot XD, and a forged latch lets the whole setup swing out to 90 or 120 degrees so you can open your Sprinter's rear doors without unloading a thing.

Fits: Universal, any van or vehicle with a 2-inch, Class III or higher hitch receiver, including the Mercedes Sprinter. Not compatible: 1.25-inch or Class I/II receivers, hitch extenders, towing, and RVs or motorhomes (Kuat does not rate it for them).

  • 350 lb capacity with the load inside 28 in of the accessory hitch pin, 250 lb from 28 to 40 in
  • 90 and 120 degree swing positions, locked with a machined safety pin and an oversized forged handle
  • Vertical bike rack approved, up to 4 bikes and 150 lb (rack weight not included)
  • Flatlock hitch cam and locking hitch pin for a tight, rattle-free, secured connection
  • Accessory ready: bolt on the Accessory Hoop with MOLLE Panel and add the Spare Tire Adapter
  • Steel construction, Sandy Black powder coat, Kuat No Worries Limited Warranty

Choose your swing side: Passenger swings the arm toward the curb side, so you work from the sidewalk. Driver swings toward the street side. Pick the side you want to stand on when the rack is open.

Pair it with: KUAT Piston Pro · KUAT Piston Pro X · MOLLE Accessory Hoop · Spare Tire Adapter. Lighter loads? See the KUAT Pivot v3.

See it on your van. Add the Pivot™ XD Heavy-Duty Swing-Away Hitch to your build in our 3D Van Builder and preview it on a real Sprinter before you buy.

Product Details

Why we carry the Pivot XD

A loaded hitch rack on a Sprinter means every trip to the back of the van starts with tilting the rack or pulling bikes off. The Pivot XD puts a hinge between the receiver and the rack. Pull one pin, swing the rack to the side, and both rear doors open with the bikes still strapped down.

Built for heavier setups

The XD is the heavy-duty member of Kuat's Pivot family. Compared with the Pivot v3, it adds 100 lb of capacity, it's approved for vertical hanging bike racks, and it accepts bolt-on accessories. The tradeoff is weight: it's 68 lb on its own, so plan on a helper when you install it.

  • Forged latch that holds the arm closed under load and road vibration
  • Conical ball bearing pivot for a smooth swing when the arm is loaded
  • Custom-machined safety pin that locks the arm closed, at 90 degrees, or at 120 degrees
  • Patented Flatlock hitch cam in both receivers to take out play and rattle
  • Locking hitch pin included

What you can carry

  • Platform bike racks: most 2-inch platform and tray racks. Kuat bike racks are limited to 3 trays (250 lb max) on the Pivot XD.
  • Vertical hanging racks: up to 4 bikes and 150 lb, not counting the rack itself.
  • Cargo carriers and baskets: up to 350 lb when the load stays within 28 in of the accessory hitch pin. Check with your carrier's manufacturer that it's approved for swing-away use.
  • Overland gear: add the Accessory Hoop with MOLLE Panel for fuel packs, recovery boards and bags, then the Spare Tire Adapter for a full-size spare.

Fits: Universal, any van or vehicle with a 2 in Class III+ receiver, incl. Mercedes Sprinter

What's in the Box

  • KUAT Pivot XD swing-away hitch (passenger or driver)
  • Locking hitch pin with hitch lock
  • 2 keys
  • 8mm security hex key
Install Time15 to 30 minutes
DIY FriendlyYes, slides into your receiver, no drilling
Drilling RequiredNo

The Pivot XD slides into your receiver like any hitch accessory. There's no drilling and no wiring. Kuat includes the 8mm security hex key for the hitch cam. Kuat's user guide covers every step with diagrams.

Before you start

  • Confirm your receiver is 2-inch and Class III or higher, and check your vehicle's tongue weight rating.
  • Grab a helper. The Pivot XD weighs 68 lb, and Kuat recommends a second set of hands to hold it level while you tighten the cam.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Stacking extenders. The Pivot XD is already a hitch extender. Don't add a riser, extender or adapter in front of or behind it.
  • Skipping the cam. Fully tighten the Flatlock cam after the hitch pin is in. Lifting slightly on the end of the arm helps it seat tight and level.
  • Overloading the far end. Capacity drops from 350 lb to 250 lb once the load reaches past 28 in from the accessory hitch pin.
  • Taking Kuat bike racks off-road on it. Kuat does not approve its bike racks for off-road use on the Pivot XD. The Pivot XD itself is off-road rated to 250 lb on non-technical terrain at slow speeds.
  • A lever that's too stiff or too loose. Adjust the clamping force by slightly loosening or tightening the bolt inside the lever handle.
  • Towing, tarps and covers. Don't tow with it, and don't use tarps, rain covers or wind covers on the load.

Check bolt tightness from time to time, and more often on rough roads. Rinse and wipe it down when it gets dirty. Kuat says no lubrication is needed.

How to choose a swing-away hitch for your van

A swing-away hitch decides whether you can get into the back of your van with the rack loaded. These are the questions customers ask us, in the order that matters.

1. Will it fit your receiver?

Swing-away hitches need a 2-inch receiver, and heavy-duty models need Class III or higher. They also count as a hitch extender, so you can't stack another extender on them. Kuat does not rate its Pivot swing-aways for RVs or motorhomes.

How to choose: Confirm a 2-inch, Class III or higher receiver and your tongue weight rating before anything else.

2. How much weight are you carrying, and how far out?

Leverage is the limit. The farther the load sits from the hitch, the less it can safely weigh.

How to choose: Add up the rack plus bikes or cargo. Over 250 lb, or a long cargo setup, points to a heavy-duty swing-away.

3. Platform or vertical bike rack?

Vertical hanging racks put more leverage on a swing arm, and many swing-aways don't allow them.

How to choose: If you run or plan to run a vertical rack, pick a swing-away that's approved for it.

4. Which side should it swing?

Most swing-aways come in passenger-side and driver-side versions.

How to choose: Pick the side you want to stand on when the rack is open. Passenger side keeps you on the curb.

5. Will you take it off-road?

Off-road ratings are lower than on-road ratings, and some racks aren't approved off-road at all.

How to choose: If you drive dirt roads loaded, check the off-road capacity of both the swing-away and the rack.

6. Do you want to carry more than bikes?

Some swing-aways accept bolt-on panels and spare tire mounts.

How to choose: If a spare tire or MOLLE gear is on your list, pick a swing-away with accessories made for it.

Before you order

  • 2-inch, Class III or higher receiver confirmed

How the KUAT Pivot XD stacks up

  • Fitment: 2-inch, Class III or higher receivers, including the Mercedes Sprinter. Not rated for RVs or motorhomes.
  • Weight: 350 lb within 28 in, 250 lb from 28 to 40 in. The Pivot v3 is rated to 250 lb within 28 in.
  • Rack type: approved for vertical racks up to 4 bikes and 150 lb, and for most platform racks like the Piston Pro and Piston Pro X.
  • Swing side: passenger or driver, both with 90 and 120 degree positions.
  • Off-road: rated to 250 lb on non-technical terrain at slow speeds.
  • Accessories: the MOLLE Accessory Hoop and Spare Tire Adapter bolt straight on.
Will the Pivot XD fit my Mercedes Sprinter?
Yes. It fits any Sprinter with a 2-inch, Class III or higher hitch receiver. The Pivot XD is universal and works on any van, truck or SUV with that receiver. Reach out to our team at products@sandyvans.com or (619) 812-1903 if you're not sure what hitch your van has.
Should I get the passenger or driver side version?
Passenger swings the rack toward the curb side, so you load and unload from the sidewalk. Driver swings toward the street side. Both open to 90 and 120 degrees. Pick the side you want to stand on when the rack is open.
How much weight can the Pivot XD carry?
350 lb when the load stays within 28 in of the accessory hitch pin, and 250 lb from 28 to 40 in. Kuat bike racks are limited to 3 trays and 250 lb. Off-road, the limit is 250 lb. Always stay under your vehicle's tongue weight rating, which can be lower than these numbers on some Class III receivers.
Can I use a vertical hanging bike rack on it?
Yes. The Pivot XD is approved for vertical hanging racks up to 4 bikes and 150 lb, not counting the weight of the rack.
Can I take it off-road?
The Pivot XD is off-road rated to 250 lb on non-technical terrain at slow speeds. Kuat does not approve its bike racks for off-road use on the Pivot XD. Check bolts often on rough roads, and avoid rock crawling, jumps and other technical driving.
Can I use it on an RV or a van titled as a motorhome?
Kuat does not rate the Pivot XD for RVs, travel trailers or motorhomes, and doesn't recommend any of its swing-away products on RVs. If your Sprinter is a factory-built Class B motorhome, reach out to our team before you order.
Can I add a hitch extender or riser?
No. The Pivot XD already works as a hitch extender, and Kuat says to use only one extension at a time. It's also 2-inch only, with no 1.25-inch version.
How far back does it move my rack?
About 15 in farther from the van. Kuat's user guide has the full dimensions.
Pivot XD or Pivot v3?
The Pivot XD carries 350 lb, takes vertical racks, and accepts the MOLLE hoop and spare tire adapter. The Pivot v3 is lighter and rated to 250 lb, with no vertical racks or accessories. If you carry e-bikes, a cargo box, or want a spare tire on the back, go with the XD.
What accessories fit the Pivot XD?
Kuat makes two: the Accessory Hoop with MOLLE Panel for fuel packs, recovery boards and bags, and the Spare Tire Adapter for a full-size spare up to 37 in. The spare tire adapter mounts to the MOLLE hoop, so you need both for a spare.
Can I tow with the Pivot XD?
No. It isn't designed for towing. Remove it and use your receiver directly to tow.
