Your full-size spare, on the hitch, swinging out of the way with everything else.

The KUAT Pivot XD Spare Tire Adapter mounts on top of the MOLLE Accessory Hoop and carries a full-size spare up to 37 in diameter. It swings with the Pivot XD, so the spare, your bike rack and the bikes all move aside together when you open the rear doors.

Requires the KUAT Pivot XD Accessory Hoop with MOLLE Panel (sold separately) and the KUAT Pivot XD.

Fits: KUAT Pivot XD with the MOLLE Accessory Hoop, on any van, including the Mercedes Sprinter. Most 5, 6 and 8 lug wheels, tires up to 37 in. Not compatible: use without the MOLLE hoop, the Pivot v3, or other swing-aways.

Why we carry the Spare Tire Adapter

A full-size spare in a Sprinter usually means giving up space under the van or inside it. The Spare Tire Adapter moves the spare to the hitch on the Pivot XD, where it swings out of the way when you need the rear doors.

How it works

The adapter bolts to the top of the MOLLE Accessory Hoop. A hex mounting plate with slotted holes takes three studs set to your wheel's lug pattern, and the included lug nuts hold the wheel on. Your bike rack stays in the Pivot XD receiver, and you can fold it up or swing the whole setup open with the spare in place.

How the weight adds up

The adapter carries a spare up to 100 lb.
The spare counts toward the Pivot XD's 350 lb limit. The adapter's own weight doesn't.
With the MOLLE panel and spare both maxed out, the rack or cargo in the Pivot XD receiver is limited to 200 lb.

Plan on setting the studs to your wheel first, then mounting the adapter, then hanging the tire. The MOLLE hoop has to be on the Pivot XD before you start. Kuat's user guide shows each step.

Tips

Lay the wheel face down on the ground and set the adapter plate inside it to find which slots line up with your lug pattern.
Mount the adapter with the Pivot XD swung fully open to 90 degrees.
Install the adapter angled slightly toward the top of the van. Kuat says this helps fit and stability.
Torque the studs, the adapter bolts and the lug nuts to 40 Nm (about 30 ft-lb). You'll need a torque wrench.
A full-size spare is heavy. Have a helper lift it onto the studs.

Mistakes to avoid

Skipping the MOLLE hoop. The adapter mounts only to the hoop.
Choosing too short a depth. Measure backspacing first, and size up when you're between sizes.
Using these lug nuts on your van. The included lug nuts are only for the spare on the adapter.
Going over 100 lb. Weigh your spare if it's an oversized off-road tire.

How to choose a spare tire mount for your swing-away

1. Does it fit your setup?

How to choose: This adapter needs the Pivot XD and the MOLLE Accessory Hoop. If you don't have both, order them together.

2. Will your tire fit?

How to choose: Tires up to 37 in diameter and 100 lb. Most 5, 6 and 8 lug wheels work.

3. Which mount depth do you need?

The three depths match different wheel backspacing. The mount has to be at least as deep as your backspacing so the tire clears the panel.

Lay a straight edge across the inside (back) face of the tire.
Measure from the wheel's mounting flange to the straight edge.
Pick a mount depth equal to or greater than that number.

Example: a 175mm backspace needs the 200mm adapter. The 250mm also works and leaves more room for gear on the MOLLE panel.

How to choose: Keep the tire as close to the van as your backspacing allows. Size up if you're between sizes or you plan to mount gear on the MOLLE panel.

4. How much else are you carrying?

How to choose: Add the spare, the MOLLE gear and your rack. With both the panel and spare maxed out, the Pivot XD receiver load drops to 200 lb.

Do I need the MOLLE hoop to use the Spare Tire Adapter?

Yes. The adapter mounts directly to the KUAT Pivot XD Accessory Hoop with MOLLE Panel, which bolts to the Pivot XD. You need all three.

Which mount depth do I need?

Measure your spare's backspacing: lay a straight edge across the back of the tire and measure from the wheel's mounting flange to the edge. Pick the 150mm, 200mm or 250mm adapter that's equal to or deeper than that measurement. If you're between sizes, size up.

Can I just buy the 250mm to be safe?

You can, and it gives more room for gear on the MOLLE panel. The tradeoff is the tire sits farther from the van, which adds leverage. Kuat's advice is to keep the load as tight to the van as your backspacing allows.

What size tire will it carry?

Full-size spares up to 37 in in diameter and 100 lb, on most 5, 6 and 8 lug wheels.
