Product Details

Built for the Roof. Built for the Life.

The Sandbar Roof Rack was designed for the Sprinter owner who actually uses their van. Not just drives it — uses it. The kind of person who straps a surfboard up top, runs solar down below, loads kayaks before sunrise, and rolls back into camp with gear that's exactly where they left it.

The key innovation is the dual-height crossbar system. One bar sits lower for solar panels. The next bar rides higher so boards and long gear clear the panels underneath. Everything fits. Nothing stacks awkwardly. No compromises between energy and adventure.

Every crossmember is built from 8020 aluminum T-slot extrusion. Any accessory — solar brackets, Starlink mounts, gear tracks — drops right into the T-track and slides to wherever you need it. The crossmembers mount at two heights and at any of multiple slot positions along the rails, so you can configure around MaxAir fans, rooftop ACs, or whatever your build calls for.

The 3/16" stainless steel air deflector does double duty: it cuts wind noise at highway speed and gives you a solid platform for light bars and pod lights along the front edge — thick enough to drill and mount anything up there without worrying about it. Trim lock along the van contact edge protects the roof. The rails and crossbars are all-aluminum: lightweight, strong, and genuinely rust-free for the long haul.

Pair the Sandbar with optional decking panels and you've got a walkable rooftop platform for loading gear, catching a sunset, or setting up a rooftop tent. The rack is rated to 600 lbs (evenly distributed), so it can handle serious weight without flex.

The install is no-drill and mounts directly into your factory roof rail channels. No modifications to your van. 2–3 hours with basic hand tools.

The 144 kit uses 12 rail brackets (6 per side). The 170 uses 16, and the 170 EXT uses 18.

Choosing Your Sandbar: Wheelbase First

The Sandbar comes in three sizes — 144, 170, and 170 EXT — to match your Sprinter's wheelbase exactly. The rack is 55" wide across all sizes; the length and weight change with the wheelbase.

  • 144 WB: 55" x 129", 70 lbs — 8 cross members
  • 170 WB: 55" x 169", 80 lbs — adds side rail extensions and 10 cross members
  • 170 EXT: 55" x 185", 85 lbs — maximum length, 11 cross members

Solar + Gear: Why Dual-Height Crossbars Matter

If you're running solar and carrying gear, the dual-height crossbar system is the reason to choose the Sandbar over a flat rack. Mount your panels on the lower crossbar position — they stay clean and low-profile. Then put your boards or kayaks on the raised bars above. The gear will cast some shade on the panels, but they keep generating and your layout stays organized.

Add Decking Panels: Four Sizes, Endless Configs

The SV Roof Rack Decking Panels drop into the Sandbar's crossbar grid and give you a solid, walkable surface — strong enough for gear, a rooftop tent, or walkable solar. Four panel sizes let you configure around fans, ACs, and solar layouts:

  • Panel A (60" × 18", $395) — runs lengthwise. Stack three across the rack width to span the full roof; six panels gives you a 10-foot continuous deck.
  • Panel B (54" × 18", $365) — runs widthwise across the rack, spanning rail to rail. Use these to fill gaps or section off a zone beside your fan or AC.
  • Panel C (26" × 18", $225) — sized to flank a MaxAir fan. One on each side of your fan opening gives you clean decking with no awkward cutouts.
  • Panel D (54" × 12.5", $255) — the narrow fill panel. Great for the tail end of the rack, around a Starlink dish, or any spot where a full panel won't fit.

For walkable solar, lay decking panels down first, then set walkable solar panels on top — you get power and a platform in the same footprint. Shop Decking Panels →

Lighting and Awning Compatibility

The front air deflector is 3/16" stainless — thick enough to drill and mount light bars, pod lights, or anything else you want up front. The rack also has built-in special mounting for most side awning systems. Check your specific awning's mount requirements before purchasing.

Does the Sandbar fit my Sprinter?
Compatible with 2007+ Mercedes Sprinter High Roof in 144, 170, and 170 EXT wheelbases. Factory roof rail channels are required. Does not fit Low Roof Sprinters.
Is drilling required to install the roof rack?
No drilling required. The rack mounts directly into your Sprinter's factory roof rail channels using rail brackets. No holes in your van, no permanent modifications.
Can I run solar panels on the Sandbar?
Yes. The dual-height crossbar system is designed for exactly this. Mount your solar panels on the lower crossbar position to keep them low-profile, then use the raised bars above for boards, kayaks, or gear. The gear will cast some shade on the panels but they keep generating, and your layout stays organized.
What is the weight capacity?
600 lbs, evenly distributed. Always distribute load weight evenly across the crossbars and secure all loads properly before driving.
Does the Sandbar work with awnings?
Yes, it's compatible with most awning systems. It's pictured with the Fiamma F45s. Check your specific awning's mounting requirements to confirm compatibility with your rack position.
Can I mount a rooftop tent on the Sandbar?
Yes. The rack is rated at 600 lbs and the crossbars can support a rooftop tent. For the most stable platform, add the optional SV Roof Deck Panels. Check your specific tent's mounting specs for crossbar spacing requirements.
Are decking panels included?
Decking panels and the side ladder are sold separately. You can add SV Roof Deck Panels to your order to create a solid, walkable rooftop platform.
What's the difference between the 144, 170, and 170 EXT kits?
Each kit matches your Sprinter's wheelbase. The 144 WB rack is 55" x 129" and weighs 70 lbs with 8 cross members. The 170 WB is 55" x 169" and weighs 80 lbs with 10 cross members and side rail extensions. The 170 EXT is 55" x 185" and weighs 85 lbs with 11 cross members. Hardware quantities vary accordingly.
