Battery-powered cooling with every install part sorted before it ships.

The Dometic CoolAir RTX 2000 is a 12V rooftop air conditioner with a variable-speed inverter compressor. It puts out 2000W (6,824 BTU) of cooling and drops to about 19A in Eco mode. We pair it with the Upfitters Premium Install Kit, which replaces Dometic's own install kit with better hardware, a one-piece dual-layer gasket and a 20 ft 4 AWG cable with an Anderson connector.

There is no factory roof opening on a Sprinter or most vans. Plan on cutting an 18.9 x 15.3 in opening for this unit.

Fits: universal, any van, RV or truck with a flat roof section for an 18.9 x 15.3 in opening between roof supports. Not compatible: 24V or 48V house systems (this is a 12V unit) or roofs tilted more than 20 degrees.

  • 2000W (6,824 BTU) of cooling on 12V
  • Inverter compressor that ramps down to about 19A in Eco mode
  • Self-contained: all A/C components live in the roof unit, only 6.6 in tall
  • Auto, Eco, Boost and Manual modes, 5 fan speeds and a timer up to 10 hours
  • Upfitters Premium Install Kit included: brackets, hardware, dual-layer gasket, 20 ft 4 AWG cable, fuses and connectors

Need something to bolt to inside? Add our CNC-cut Dometic RTX Trim Kit. Already have an RTX? Get the Premium Install Kit on its own. Comparing units? Read our van air conditioner buyer's guide.

Why we pair the RTX 2000 with the Upfitters kit

The RTX 2000 is a proven 12V parking cooler. Dometic's own install kit works, but the Upfitters Premium Install Kit speeds up the install, seals better with a one-piece dual-layer gasket, and includes heavy 4 AWG cable with an Anderson connector. Everything you need ships together, with no leftover parts.

What you get

  • Dometic CoolAir RTX 2000 12V rooftop air conditioner with remote
  • Upfitters Premium Install Kit: brackets, hardware, gasket, 20 ft 4 AWG cable, fuses and connectors

Plan the inside, too

The RTX bolts through the roof to a flange inside. Our CNC-cut Dometic RTX Trim Kit gives you that flange and a finished bamboo trim ring, so you don't have to make one.

Power planning

The RTX draws 10 to 58A on 12V, around 19A in Eco. Dometic recommends a battery bank of 180Ah or more. A low-voltage cutoff protects your batteries; it's set to 11.4V and adjustable from 10 to 12.5V.

Fitment & Compatibility

Fits: Universal; new roof opening required on vans

Not compatible with: 24V or 48V house systems; roof tilt over 20 degrees

What's in the Box

  • Dometic CoolAir RTX 2000 roof unit
  • Remote control
  • Dometic user manual
  • Upfitters mounting brackets and hardware
  • One-piece dual-layer gasket
  • 20 ft 4 AWG UL1426 cable with Anderson connector
  • Fuses, fuse holders and connectors
Install Time2 to 3 hours
DIY FriendlyAdvanced; roof cut and 12V wiring
Drilling RequiredYes, 18.9 x 15.3 in roof opening

There is no factory opening on a Sprinter, so the install starts with an 18.9 x 15.3 in roof cut between the roof supports. Plan on 2 to 3 hours once that's laid out. Roof sealant isn't included. See Dometic's installation manual for the full steps.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Cutting the opening across a roof support. It has to sit between supports spaced no more than 16 in on center.
  • Skipping the interior flange. The unit needs something solid inside to bolt to; our Trim Kit is made for this.
  • Mounting too far back. Dometic recommends slightly forward of center and centered side to side.
  • Missing the 2A fuse on the voltage sense lead. The power lead takes an 80A fuse.
  • Sliding the unit across the roof. That can damage the bottom gasket and cause leaks.

After install

Set the low-voltage shutoff for your battery type in the configuration menu (P.01). Want us to install it? Reach out to our team at products@sandyvans.com or (619) 812-1903.

Tools You'll Need

How to choose a van air conditioner

1. Will it fit your roof?

How to choose: The RTX 2000 needs an 18.9 x 15.3 in opening between roof supports and handles up to 20 degrees of tilt. Vans have no factory opening, so plan the cut.

2. What voltage is your battery bank?

How to choose: The RTX 2000 is 12V only. On a 24V or 48V system, look at a DC unit built for that voltage.

3. How much battery do you have?

How to choose: Dometic recommends 180Ah or more. Eco mode at about 19A stretches your run time.

4. How much install work do you want?

How to choose: A complete kit saves sourcing parts. This package includes the Upfitters Premium Install Kit; add our Trim Kit for the interior flange.

Before you order

  • 12V house system confirmed
  • Battery bank of 180Ah or more
  • Roof spot between supports measured
  • Interior flange planned (or add our Trim Kit)
  • Roof sealant on hand

How the RTX 2000 package stacks up

Does a Sprinter have a factory opening for this AC?
No. Sprinters and most vans have no factory roof opening, so you'll cut an 18.9 x 15.3 in hole between the roof supports. It's universal, so it fits any van with a flat enough roof section.
What's the Upfitters Premium Install Kit?
It replaces Dometic's install kit. It includes all the hardware and mounting brackets, a one-piece dual-layer gasket, a 20 ft 4 AWG UL1426 cable with an Anderson connector, and the fuses, fuse holders and connectors. Batteries, breakers and roof sealant are not included.
Do I need the Dometic RTX Trim Kit?
The ceiling inside needs something solid to bolt the RTX to. Our Trim Kit is a CNC-cut 1/2 in plywood mounting flange plus a bamboo trim ring, so you don't have to build your own. If your ceiling framing is already set up for it, you can skip it.
How long will it run on my batteries?
It depends on your battery bank, the heat and the mode. Eco mode draws about 19A. Dometic recommends at least 180Ah of battery and quotes up to 12 hours of run time under the right conditions.
Can I run it on a 24V or 48V system?
No. The RTX 2000 is a 12V unit (it operates from 10 to 15V).
Can I paint it?
Yes. Dometic allows painting the upper casing only, removed from the unit, ideally by a paint shop and in a light color.
How long does installation take?
Plan on 2 to 3 hours once the roof opening and wiring path are planned. Want us to do it? Reach out to our team at products@sandyvans.com or (619) 812-1903.
Do you install products for customers?
Yes. Many SV products can be professionally installed at our San Diego shop. Reach out to our team to schedule. Email products@sandyvans.com or call 619-812-1903.
What is your shipping and return policy?
Most SV products ship free. For returns, see our Returns & Refunds policy or reach out to our team at products@sandyvans.com.

Always. We are a small team in San Diego. Email products@sandyvans.com or call 619-812-1903 and you'll get a real answer, not a chatbot.
