Product Details

The Sprinter's Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) makes it one of the hardest modern vans to remote-start. Most universal aftermarket systems require bypassing the EIS or splicing factory wiring — workarounds that can interfere with Keyless Go and leave your van's security system confused. Mid City Engineering took a different approach: they engineered generation-specific plug-and-play T-harnesses that connect to the Sprinter's factory connectors without touching a wire.

The result is remote start that feels like it came from the factory. Your OEM key fob still works exactly as before — Lock-Unlock-Lock sends the start command through the same signal path the van already understands. No new habits. No replacement fob. No bypass modules fighting with the EIS.

Three Sprinter Generations, One Product Line

The W907 install is genuinely plug-and-play: disconnect the battery, connect two harness plugs, mount the key box, reinstall the kick panel. No tools. About 45-60 minutes. The W906 is more involved — the EIS module comes out, you connect the harness in-line, and you drill one 3/4" hole for the hood pin switch. Either way, the result is identical clean Keyless Go-compatible remote start.

High Idle for RV and Upfitter Builds

Van conversions that run diesel heaters, large battery banks, or upfitter-mounted equipment often need more from the engine at idle than the factory RPM provides. The SmartKey Starter's High Idle feature (RV-suffix variants) raises idle RPM via the OBD port — no wiring modification — keeping the alternator spinning fast enough to meet house loads without an auxiliary generator.

If your build has a Webasto or Espar heater, a lithium bank above 200Ah, or significant 12V loads, the RV variant pays for itself quickly. If your van is a straightforward daily driver or work van, the base variant is all you need.

A Full Alarm, Included

SmartKey Starter is not just remote start. Out of the box, it monitors all doors and triggers the OEM horn on a breach. The W906 adds an LED alarm indicator. Optional upgrades across both generations include an external siren, the Compustar DAS II digital sensor (shock, tilt, glass-break, and tow detection), and Compustar RF remotes for extended range. Add a Compustar Drone or Directed Smart Start module for full smartphone control with GPS tracking and alarm push notifications.

W907 (2019-2026) — Plug & Play, No Tools

Disconnect the negative battery terminal under the driver-side dash. Remove the driver-side kick panel to access the PCM and EIS harnesses. Plug the PCM T-harness into the black 32-pin PCM connector, and the EIS T-harness into the blue 40-pin EIS connector. Install the key box (battery emulator) behind the dash. Mount the SmartKey Starter module in an accessible location. Install the hood pin switch on the driver-side fender mount — this step is not required on 2025-2026 G4I Sprinters, which have a factory hood pin sensor. Reconnect the battery and perform the key sync: start the van with the key in the ignition and let it run for at least 30 seconds. Test remote start (Lock-Unlock-Lock on the OEM fob) and verify the hood pin by opening the hood and confirming remote start is blocked.

W907 firmware note: the module must be on V5.23 or later for gas engines; V5.25 or later for 2023+ models. Mid City provides firmware update instructions on their Dozuki platform.

W906 (2007-2018) — Moderate, EIS Removal Required

Remove three T-25 screws from the under-dash panel, then pull both under-dash panels to expose the ignition column. Use the EIS Removal Tool to unscrew the retaining ring, then pull the EIS module down to access its rear wiring. Unplug the factory 5-pin and 8-pin connectors from the EIS, connect the T-harness female plugs to the EIS, then reconnect the factory male plugs to the T-harness. The EIS now sits in-harness.

Install the hood pin switch on the driver-side fender mount: clean the T-30 mounting screw area with a pick tool to remove body sealant, remove the T-30 screw, slide the bracket between the fender metal layers, reinstall, and adjust pin height. The correct height depends on whether an OEM hood liner is installed — the guide has photographs for both configurations. Route the hood pin wire through the firewall grommet and connect to the gray wire on the 6-pin EXP pigtail (solder and insulate).

SKSNG906RV note: the OBD programmer is included and used separately to activate High Idle after the remote start install is complete. Follow the OBD programming instructions linked in the guide.

After installation, perform the key sync: start the van manually and let it run at least 30 seconds. If remote start fails on the first test, count the parking light flashes after the failed attempt — each count corresponds to a specific error code listed in the install guide.

There are two decisions to make: which generation fits your Sprinter, and whether you need High Idle.

Step 1: Match Your Sprinter's Year

This is the non-negotiable decision. The SmartKey Starter uses generation-specific T-harnesses calibrated to each platform's wiring. Using the wrong generation results in a module that cannot pair with the EIS:

2007-2018 Sprinter (NCV3/W906): order SKSNG906 or SKSNG906RV
2019-2024 Sprinter (VS30/W907): order SKSNG907 or SKSNG907RV
2025-2026 Sprinter (VS30/W907 G4I): order SKSNG907G or SKSNG907RVG

If you are unsure of your Sprinter's exact year, check the door sticker on the driver-side B-pillar, or run a VIN decode. The 2025-2026 G4I variant is not interchangeable with 2019-2024 units — the firmware protocol changed, and the 2025-2026 models also have a factory hood pin sensor that eliminates one install step.

Step 2: Base or High Idle (RV Variant)?

High Idle raises engine RPM during idle using the OBD port, no wiring modification required. This is the right choice if your van has any of the following:

A diesel parking heater (Webasto, Espar, Eberspacher) that needs clean fuel pressure and amp draw on startup
A lithium battery bank above roughly 200Ah that the factory alternator can't keep fully charged at idle
Upfitter equipment — compressors, inverters, refrigerators — running off dedicated circuits
Any scenario where you regularly park and idle with house loads running

If your van is a passenger or cargo van with no auxiliary electrical system, the base variant is all you need. The alarm, remote start range, and all add-on compatibility are identical between base and RV variants — the only difference is whether the OBD programmer is included.

Step 3: Installation Reality Check

W907 (2019-2026) — Plug & Play

Two harness connections behind the dash. No tools. No drilling. Approximately 45-60 minutes. Mid City's 35-step illustrated guide walks through every connector, and the module pre-syncs to the EIS on the first key cycle. Most mechanically comfortable owners complete this without help. Sandy Vans offers professional installation in San Diego for those who prefer it.

W906 (2007-2018) — Moderate

The EIS module has to come out of the ignition column using a dedicated EIS Removal Tool (not included — available at specialty auto suppliers). You connect the harness in-line, reinstall the EIS, and drill one 3/4" hole on the driver-side fender mount for the hood pin switch. Plan for 30 minutes with experience, or up to 3.5 hours on a first attempt. The hood pin bracket position varies depending on whether an OEM hood liner is present — the install guide covers both configurations.

Which SmartKey Starter variant is right for my Sprinter?

Match your year: W906 covers 2007–2018 Sprinters; W907 covers 2019–2026, including the G4I variant for 2025–2026. Within each generation, choose the High Idle version if your van has a diesel heater, house batteries, or other auxiliary power systems. See the Buying Guide tab for a full decision walkthrough.

Can the van start itself when my house batteries get low?

Yes. The trigger input is included in the kit. Wire it to the relay output on a battery monitor (a Victron BMV-712, for example), set your low-voltage or state-of-charge threshold on the monitor, and the van starts itself when the bank drops that far. Both ends need to be programmed correctly, so plan this into the install rather than adding it later. The same input accepts signals from temperature monitors and compressor monitors. Remote start runs for one hour by default, and if the trigger is still held when that hour expires the van restarts and keeps cycling until the trigger clears. What is High Idle and do I need it?

High Idle raises engine RPM while parked so your alternator keeps up with house loads, runs a diesel heater more efficiently, or supports inverter draw. It is configured through the OBD port using the programmer included with the High Idle versions, and can be toggled from the turn signal stalk with the parking brake on. If your van has no auxiliary power systems, the base version is all you need.

Can I install this myself, or do I need a shop?

W907 (2019-2026): fully plug-and-play, no tools required, approximately 45-60 minutes. Most owners handle it comfortably. W906 (2007-2018): moderate difficulty — requires an EIS Removal Tool, T-25 and T-30 Torx drivers, a panel tool, pick tool, and a 3/4" drill bit for the hood pin. Allow 30 minutes to 3.5 hours. Will installing a remote start void my Sprinter warranty?

The SmartKey Starter does not cut or splice factory wiring on the W907 (plug-and-play). On the W906, the EIS is disconnected and re-connected via harness. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a dealer cannot void a warranty solely because an aftermarket accessory was added — they must prove the accessory caused the specific failure. Reach out to our team if you have concerns about your specific situation.

Are AM remotes compatible?

No. AM (amplitude modulation) remotes are not supported. Out of the box, remote start is triggered with your OEM key fob using the Lock-Unlock-Lock sequence. If you want extended range or dedicated remote start buttons, the SmartKey Starter supports optional Compustar RF remotes, which connect to the module's antenna port.

Can I control remote start from my phone?

Yes, with an optional add-on. Both Compustar Drone and Directed Smart Start modules connect directly to the SmartKey Starter and add smartphone-based remote start, GPS tracking, alarm notifications, and status monitoring. Contact us at contact@sandyvans.com to add one to your order.

Does this work in Winnebago Revel, Storyteller Overland, and other Sprinter-based RV builds?

In most cases, yes. The SmartKey Starter is chassis-based and works in any Sprinter conversion or RV on a compatible year. Fitment depends on your trim level, any existing dash modifications, and accessories the upfitter added near the EIS area. Contact us before ordering if your van has a heavily modified dash or non-stock EIS configuration.

What is different about the 2025–2026 Sprinter variant?

The G4I (Generation 4 Integration) variant is calibrated for the 2025-2026 Sprinter, which uses an updated firmware communication protocol. Additionally, 2025-2026 Sprinters have a factory hood pin sensor, so no separate hood pin installation is needed. Do not use the standard W907 variants on a 2025-2026 Sprinter — they will not pair correctly.
