Product Details

Putting a bigger tank in your Sprinter is half the job. The other half is your dash. The instrument cluster calculates distance to empty from the stock 24 gallons, so a full 45 gallon tank at 20 mpg shows roughly 480 miles when you actually have about 900. Keep driving and the van counts down to empty and thinks you're out of fuel while the tank is still close to half full. That's why this module isn't optional on a 2019+ Sprinter with a bigger tank.

This module plugs in permanently between the factory harness and the ignition system and updates the capacity your van uses for the range calculation. It supports 40, 45, and 47 gallon tanks. It also adds the Mercedes J51 fuel gauge option, which the larger tanks need for the fuel gauge itself to read accurately. If your van already has J51, you still need the module for the capacity update.

It's designed by Mid City Engineering, made in the USA, and it's the module we recommend with our 45 gallon Sprinter fuel tank. It's for 2019-2026 Sprinters only. There's no equivalent for 2007-2018 vans.

About 1 to 2 hours, all from the driver's footwell. It's a plug-in harness, so there's no cutting or splicing. The full step-by-step instructions with photos are linked below.

Where installs go wrong

Disconnect the battery first. Use the factory battery disconnect behind the small panel to the right of the accelerator: press the red button and pull the disconnect off the post.
Go easy on the lower dash panel. When you pull it toward the accelerator, the OBD2 port stays plugged in and the hood release is attached. Pulling too hard can damage either one.
Connector order matters. The factory harness plugs into port B on the new harness, and connector A goes into the factory port on the fender wall. Close the black latch until it clicks.
Seat the weatherstripping. When you're done, press the door weatherstripping flush onto the pinch weld so it seals.

Setting your tank size

The module defaults to a 47 gallon tank. For a 45 gallon tank: with the van off and your foot off the brake, press the start button twice, pull the turn signal stalk toward you, and press unlock on the key once. For a 40 gallon tank: same sequence, but press unlock twice. Your range reading updates to the new capacity.

How to Get an Accurate Fuel Gauge and Range After a Tank Upgrade

You put in a bigger tank, filled it up, and the dash says you have the same range as before. Keep driving and the van will think it's empty while you still have plenty of fuel. That's normal without a recalibration, and it's fixable on 2019+ Sprinters. Here's what's going on.

1. Gauge and distance to empty are two different problems

The fuel gauge needle reads the float in your tank. The distance to empty number is calculated by the van using the factory tank capacity. A larger tank with the right float can keep the needle accurate, but the range number keeps assuming 24 gallons until something tells the van otherwise.

How to choose: fill the tank, reset your trip meter, and compare the range shown to what you actually drive. If it's reading roughly half of real range, it's still calculating from the stock capacity.

2. Does your van have J51?

J51 is the Mercedes fuel gauge option optimized for the auxiliary fuel tap. The larger replacement tanks need it for the gauge to read accurately. Many vans have it, many don't, and you can't tell by looking at the dash.

How to choose: call your Mercedes dealer with your VIN and ask. If you don't have J51, the module adds it.

3. Your options (and why the module is a must)

Do nothing (not recommended). The van keeps thinking it has 24 gallons and will tell you you're out of fuel with fuel still in the tank. That defeats the point of the bigger tank.
J51-only fixes. Some older dongles only added J51 and left distance to empty alone. Several have been discontinued.
A module that does both (the one to get). The Recalibration Module updates the van to 40, 45, or 47 gallons and adds J51, with no splicing. We require it with every bigger tank on a 2019+ Sprinter.

4. Match it to your model year and tank size

The module is for 2019-2026 Sprinters only. It defaults to a 47 gallon tank and switches to 45 or 40 with a key sequence, so it covers our 45 gallon tank for 2019-2026 Sprinters and the shorter 40 gallon 2019+ tanks. There isn't an equivalent for 2007-2018 Sprinters, including our 47 gallon and 40 gallon NCV3 tanks.

5. Install effort

Plan on 1 to 2 hours with a T20 Torx driver and a trim clip tool. Everything happens behind the driver-side lower dash panel. The harness plugs inline with the factory connector, so nothing is cut.

What does the Fuel Capacity Recalibration Module actually do?

Two things. It updates the capacity your Sprinter uses to calculate distance to empty, so the range on your dash matches your bigger tank. And it adds the J51 fuel gauge option if your van doesn't have it, which the larger tanks need for the fuel gauge to read accurately.

Which tank sizes does it support, and how do I set mine?

40, 45, and 47 gallons. It defaults to 47. For a 45 gallon tank, with the van off and your foot off the brake, press start twice, pull the turn signal stalk toward you, and press unlock on the key once. For a 40 gallon tank, do the same but press unlock twice.

Does it work on a 2007-2018 Sprinter?

No. The module is for 2019-2026 Sprinters (VS30) only. On 2007-2018 vans, distance to empty stays based on the stock capacity, so use your trip meter for range.

I already have J51. Do I still need the module?

Yes. J51 alone keeps the fuel gauge needle accurate, but the van still calculates fuel from the stock 24 gallons, so it will think it's empty when it isn't. The module is what tells the van it has the bigger tank.

Is the module required with a bigger tank?

Yes, on 2019-2026 Sprinters. Without it, your van keeps calculating from the 24 gallon factory capacity and thinks it's empty while there's still fuel in the tank. Order it with any 40, 45, or 47 gallon tank for a 2019+ Sprinter.

Do I have to cut or splice any wires?

No. The harness plugs in between the factory connector on the driver-side fender wall and the factory harness, and the module plugs into the harness. You'll need a T20 Torx driver and a trim clip tool to get the lower dash panel off.
