Why the 2mm Flanged L-Track

Most L-track bolts onto a finished wall. Flanged track goes in with the panels: the wings hold the panel edges tight to the van, so you get a finished interior and a mounting rail in one step.

Two 84 in sections cover a 170 Sprinter or 148 Extended Transit lengthwise, which keeps cutting and scrap to a minimum.

What you get

  • 2 or 3 L-track sections, 84 in each, depending on the pack

Good to know

  • Mounting screws are not included.
  • Cut sections to length for shorter runs.

Drilling RequiredDepends on your build

L-track mounts through its 12 countersunk holes into back framing or rivnuts in the van's sheet metal. Tec Vanlife doesn't publish a separate manual for the track, so use the steps below. Reach out to our team at products@sandyvans.com or (619) 812-1903 with layout questions, or ask about a shop install in San Diego.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using 1/4 in panels under the flange; go 3/8 in or 1/2 in
  • Driving screws through the flanges; fasten through the track center
  • Hanging beds or cabinets on rivnuts alone; add back framing
  • Forgetting to order screws; they're not in the box

Tools You'll Need

  • Drill or impact driver
  • M6 or 1/4-20 flat head screws
  • Rivet tool (for back framing or rivnuts)
  • Saw with a non-ferrous blade for cutting to length
  • Tape measure and level

How to choose L-track for your van

1. Flanged or flat

Flanged track has wings that clamp the edges of your wall and ceiling panels, so the track and paneling go in as one system. Flat profiles (squared and rounded) sit on top of the surface.

How to choose: Running 1/2 in or 3/8 in panels? Go flanged. Mounting to a finished wall, the floor or furniture? Go squared or rounded.

2. Load

The 2 mm flanged track carries a 500 lb working load limit. The 6.8 mm flanged, squared and rounded tracks carry 1,000 lb (manufacturer ratings).

How to choose: Beds, overhead cabinets and heavy gear get a 1,000 lb track. Light panels and soft storage are fine on 2 mm.

3. Profile and look

Squared track is 1.18 in (30 mm) wide with a crisp edge. Rounded track is 1.95 in (49.4 mm) wide with tapered sides that blend into the surface. Both come in anodized black or satin silver.

How to choose: Pick squared for a clean, narrow line; rounded where hands, feet or gear will brush past it.

4. What's behind the wall

Every track uses the same 12 hole pattern (8 in on center, 3 1/2 in for the middle pair), which lines up with the steel L-track back framing.

How to choose: Use back framing on any run that carries weight. It spreads the load and replaces rivnuts in thin sheet metal.

5. How many sections

Plan on 84 in sections with two rows of L-track per side. Sprinter 144: 4 driver side, 2 passenger side, 4 ceiling. Sprinter 170: 4, 2, 4. Transit 130: 3, 2, 3. Transit 148 and 148 Extended: 4, 2, 4. Two 84 in tracks cover the length of a 170 Sprinter or 148 Extended Transit; a 144 Sprinter or standard 148 Transit takes one full track plus a half section.

How to choose: Count your rows, then order 2 or 3 packs to match.

Before you order

  • Decide panels first: flanged track needs them, flat track doesn't.
  • Count rows and 84 in sections per wall and ceiling.
  • Order M6 or 1/4-20 flat head screws (not included).
  • Add back framing for load-bearing runs.
  • Pick a finish: black or silver.

How this track stacks up

Will this L-track fit my van?
Yes. It's a universal track that mounts to any van wall, ceiling or floor subframe. The 84 in length and hole spacing were laid out for Mercedes Sprinter and Ford Transit runs.
How many tracks do I need?
Plan on 84 in sections with two rows of L-track per side. Sprinter 144: 4 driver side, 2 passenger side, 4 ceiling. Sprinter 170: 4, 2, 4. Transit 130: 3, 2, 3. Transit 148 and 148 Extended: 4, 2, 4. Two 84 in tracks cover the length of a 170 Sprinter or 148 Extended Transit; a 144 Sprinter or standard 148 Transit takes one full track plus a half section.
Do I need the L-track back framing?
Not required, but recommended. The back framing has the threaded nuts built in and lines up with the track's 12 hole pattern, so you skip setting rivnuts in the van's sheet metal, where a rivnut can spin or fail to set.
What panel thickness works with the flange?
1/2 in or 3/8 in panels. 3/8 in is the best alternative to 1/2 in because it closely matches the flange's 0.36 in clearance and sits snug against the sheet metal. 1/4 in panels are too thin to fill the space under the flange.
What screws do I need?
M6 socket flat head (metric) or 1/4-20 flat head screws with a 90 degree countersink. Screws are not included.
What fittings work with it?
Any standard single or double stud L-track fitting, including our L-Track O-Ring Stud Fitting for straps, bungees and carabiners.
Black or silver, 2 pack or 3 pack?
Finish is a style choice; both are anodized for corrosion resistance. 2 pack or 3 pack of 84 in sections in anodized black.
