Gas, firewood, and dirty gear ride outside. Your van stays clean.

The SV Trail Tray is a fold-out aluminum tray that mounts to your rear door rack and carries the rugged, messy stuff you don't want inside: fuel cans, firewood, a muddy cooler, the camp grill. Pull the pins and it flips down. When you're done, it folds back up against the rack and sticks out only about 3.3 inches. It's the base of our SV Surf Rack, sold on its own.

Fits: Any van with a rear door rack installed. We recommend the SV Starboard Rack or SV Port Rack.
Not compatible: Vans without a rear door rack.

  • Tray is 17.56" front to back x 19.36" wide, with a 2.31" front lip and taller sides and back
  • Folds flat against the rack, about 3.3" deep when closed
  • Powder-coated aluminum, 50 lb weight limit
  • Sized for standard gas cans, chopped firewood, coolers, and grills
  • L-track compatible for tie-downs (L-Track O Rings and ratchet straps sold separately)
  • Upgrade path: add surf rack arms later and turn it into a full SV Surf Rack
See it on your van. Add the SV Trail Tray to your build in our 3D Van Builder and preview it on a real Sprinter before you buy.

Product Details

The dirty-gear shelf every van needs

Fuel cans leak fumes. Firewood sheds bark and bugs. A cooler from the beach drips sand everywhere. None of it belongs inside the van. The SV Trail Tray gives all of it a home on the outside of your rear doors, where you can hose it off and forget about it.

Folds away when you don't need it

Pull the spring pins and the tray flips down. Put the pins back in the locked position and it holds flat and ready to load. When you're done, fold it back up and it sits about 3.3 inches off the rack, so you're not adding a big box hanging off the back of the van in a parking lot.

Built from the Surf Rack

The Trail Tray is the lower half of our SV Surf Rack, sold on its own for people who want the utility tray without the board arms. Start with the tray now, and if you get into surfing, skiing, or snowboarding later, reach out to our team and we'll set you up with the arms to turn it into a full Surf Rack.

Mounts to your rear door rack

The tray attaches to a rear door rack. We built and photographed it on the SV Starboard Rack, and the SV Port Rack works the same way. Strap your load down with L-Track O Rings and ratchet straps.

What's in the Box

  • SV Trail Tray
Install Time1 to 2 hours
DIY FriendlyYes
Drilling RequiredNo
Pro InstallFree at SV HQ, San Diego

Plan on about 1 to 2 hours to mount the Trail Tray to your rear door rack. No drilling into the van.

There's no dedicated Trail Tray install video or written manual yet. The video on this page is our SV Surf Rack video. The Trail Tray is the base of that rack, so you'll see the same fold-down tray and spring pins, just without the board arms. For mounting questions, reach out to our team at products@sandyvans.com or (619) 812-1903.

Using the tray

  1. Pull the spring pins to release the tray and let it flip down
  2. Put the pins back in the locked position to hold the tray flat
  3. Load your gear and strap it down
  4. Pull the pins again to fold the tray back up when you're done

Mistakes to avoid

  • Stay under the 50 lb weight limit. A full 5 gallon gas can plus firewood adds up fast
  • Always strap the load down. Loose gear will bounce off on a washboard road
  • Make sure both pins are fully seated in the locked position before you load it

How to choose a rear door tray for your van

1. What will it mount to?

A rear tray needs a solid rack to mount to. Mounted on your rear door rack, it swings with the door, so you can still open the back of the van with the tray loaded.

How to choose: Pick a tray made to mount on your rear door rack.

2. What are you hauling?

Fuel cans, firewood, and coolers each need a flat base and sides to keep them from sliding.

How to choose: Measure your biggest item and check it against the tray size and weight limit.

3. How far does it stick out?

A tray that's always deployed makes the van longer in every parking lot and parking garage.

How to choose: Pick one that folds away flat when you're not using it.

4. Can it grow with you?

A lot of people buy a tray and later want to carry boards, skis, or bikes.

How to choose: Pick a tray that's part of a bigger system so you aren't buying twice.

Before you order

  • Confirm you have a rear door rack installed, or order one with the tray
  • Check your heaviest load against the 50 lb limit
  • Grab tie-downs if you don't have them

How the SV Trail Tray stacks up

  • Mount: any rear door rack, built on the SV Starboard Rack and SV Port Rack
  • Size: 17.56" x 19.36" with raised sides and back, 50 lb limit
  • Folds flat to about 3.3 inches
  • Upgrade path: add arms later to make it an SV Surf Rack
What's the difference between the Trail Tray and the Surf Rack?
The Trail Tray is the base of the SV Surf Rack without the board arms. It's for hauling gear like fuel, firewood, and coolers. The Surf Rack adds padded arms for boards, skis, and snowboards.
Can I add surf rack arms later?
Yes. Reach out to our team at products@sandyvans.com or (619) 812-1903 and we'll set you up with the arms to turn your Trail Tray into a full Surf Rack.
Do I need a rear door rack?
Yes. The Trail Tray mounts to a rear door rack. We recommend the SV Starboard Rack or SV Port Rack.
How much weight can it hold?
50 lbs. Always strap your load down.
Will a gas can fit?
Yes. It's sized for standard gas cans, chopped firewood, coolers, and grills.
Will it work on my RV or upfitted van?
If it has a rear door rack, yes. The Trail Tray mounts to the rack, so it works on Sprinter-based RVs and upfitters like Winnebago Revel, Storyteller Overland, Airstream Interstate, and Grech RV. Reach out to our team at products@sandyvans.com or (619) 812-1903 to confirm your rack.
Why is the video showing surfboards?
The Trail Tray is the base of the SV Surf Rack, so the video shows the full rack. The tray, pins, and fold-down work the same way.
