Why We Built This

Most Sprinter van AC installs tuck the blower unit into a closed overhead cabinet — and immediately run into a problem. The blower sits inches from sheet metal that can hit 130–140°F on a summer day, and it has to cool that ambient heat before it can cool you. The result is an overworked system, higher amp draw, and air that takes forever to feel cold.

Sandy Vans and Cruise-n-Comfort built this to fix that. The Sandy Vans headliner shelf mounts the CnC evaporator blower at ceiling height — where you want cold air to originate, since it sinks — and surrounds it with ventilation on both sides. The blower pulls cool, circulated cabin air instead of baked metal air. Same system, meaningfully better performance.

How the System Works

The VES Icebox is a split-system DC air conditioner. The compressor and condenser sit under the van (IP68-rated, designed for road debris), and the evaporator blower lives inside — in the Sandy Vans overhead shelf. Refrigerant lines run underneath the chassis and feed up through a body pillar into the interior. Once running, the variable-speed compressor throttles automatically via Eco Mode, drawing less power when the van is close to temperature.

This is a comprehensive two-part installation: the Cruise-n-Comfort VES Icebox undermount AC system, plus the Sandy Vans custom overhead headliner shelf that houses the evaporator. Plan for 16 hours with two experienced installers — a helper is strongly recommended for running refrigerant lines and setting the headliner shelf into position.

System Layout

The evaporator unit mounts inside the overhead shelf and connects to the condenser outside the van via four refrigerant hoses. The condenser bracket mounts to the van exterior (drilling required). The Control Hub sits inside the van and ties everything together. Airflow routes through 4-inch flex ducting down through the headliner shelf.

Hose Routing

Four refrigerant hoses run between the condenser and evaporator. Route them cleanly through the van body, avoid sharp bends, and secure every 12 to 18 inches. Critical: Hose 4 (the condensation return line) must be wrapped in foam pipe insulation along its entire run. Skipping this causes the hose to sweat and drip inside the van — a common issue that is easy to prevent upfront.

Drain and Ducting

The condensation drain exits via a 3/8-inch line. Route it to drain outside the van, not into a cavity. The 4-inch flex duct connects from the evaporator outlet through the headliner shelf opening into the van interior. Test airflow before sealing the headliner shelf.

Condenser Bracket

The condenser bracket mounts to the van exterior and requires drilling through the body. Use the supplied bracket assembly and hardware. The dual-fan condenser weighs 11.7 lbs, so have a helper support it during positioning. The rock guard mounts over the condenser fins with the supplied hardware.

Headliner Shelf

The Sandy Vans overhead shelf is sized to accept the VES evaporator and integrates with the van's existing headliner. Position the evaporator inside the shelf, connect the duct, then secure the shelf to the van ceiling. Confirm all hose connections are tight before closing up.

First-Run Checklist

  • Verify all four refrigerant hose connections are seated and leak-free
  • Confirm Hose 4 is foam-insulated its full length
  • Check drain line exits cleanly — no pooling inside the van
  • Confirm 4-inch duct is seated and sealed at both ends
  • Power on the system and verify the DT-05 thermostat communicates with the Control Hub
  • Run a 15-minute cool-down cycle and check for unusual noise or vibration

Van air conditioning used to mean cutting a big hole in your roof, living with constant compressor noise, or parking near shore power. Undermount DC systems changed that. If you're comparing Sprinter AC options, here's how the real decisions break down, starting with what customers ask most.

1. Where Does the Condenser Live?

This is usually the first decision and it drives everything else. Rooftop units (Dometic RTX 2000, Velit 2000R) mount on the roof and duct air down through a ceiling panel. They're self-contained, simpler to install, and don't require body drilling for the condenser. The tradeoff: they add height (important for garage clearance) and the compressor noise sits right above your head.

Undermount units (Velit 2000U, Cruise-n-Comfort VES Icebox) mount the condenser outside the van body at the rear or side, and the evaporator goes inside a bench or overhead shelf. Quieter in-cabin, no height added to the van, but more involved install and refrigerant line routing.

Rule: If you use garages, ferries, or covered parking with height limits, or you already have a roof rack build, undermount is probably your answer. If you want a simpler install window, rooftop is easier.

2. How Much Power Do You Have?

All these systems run on 12V DC. The Dometic RTX 2000 draws 10 to 17A. The Velit 2000R is in a similar range. The Cruise-n-Comfort VES Icebox pulls 38 to 55A at full load, with a variable-speed compressor that runs lower in mild conditions.

Rule: If you're running solar with a solid lithium bank (200Ah+), most systems will work. The VES Icebox is built for serious electrical systems. It's a full 10,000 BTU unit with real cooling output to match.

3. Cooling Output vs. Van Size

The Dometic RTX 2000 and Velit 2000R are rated around 7,000 to 8,000 BTU, solid for a standard 144-inch or 170-inch High Roof build with good insulation. The VES Icebox runs 10,000 BTU, giving you more headroom for larger vans, poor insulation, or desert heat.

Rule: For a well-insulated 144-inch Sprinter in a temperate climate, 7,000 to 8,000 BTU is plenty. For 170-inch or 170 EXT builds, desert use, or poor insulation, 10,000 BTU gives you real margin.

4. Noise

The VES Icebox measures 45 dB on Low, 56 dB on Medium, 63 dB on High. The variable-speed compressor runs quietly in mild conditions and ramps up when needed. Because the condenser mounts outside the van body, compressor noise in the cabin is significantly lower than rooftop units, where the compressor sits directly above the ceiling.

Rule: If you're prioritizing sleep quality in hot locations, undermount puts the compressor noise outside instead of overhead.

5. Install Complexity

Rooftop units (Dometic RTX 2000, Velit 2000R) require a roof cutout, wiring, and control panel work. The VES Icebox system is more involved: refrigerant line routing through the body, condenser bracket drilling, Control Hub wiring, and overhead shelf integration. Both are DIY-able for an experienced builder, and Sandy Vans professional installation is available for either.

The reason most VES Icebox customers choose professional installation is the hose routing. Hose 4 (the condensation return) has to be foam-insulated along its full run or it will sweat and drip inside the van. That detail is easy to get right once and expensive to fix after the build is closed up.

How loud is the system?
The VES Icebox HD/VES series runs at 45 dB on Low, 56 dB on Medium, and 63 dB on High. Low is quiet enough for sleep — roughly library ambient. For reference, a typical rooftop AC runs 60–70+ dB. The variable-speed compressor also throttles down automatically once your van reaches temperature.
What size electrical system do I need?
The 12V system draws 38–55A at full load. Plan for a minimum of 200–300Ah of lithium battery capacity and at least 400W of solar for sustained daytime use without shore power. Does the condenser need to mount under the van?
Yes. The VES Icebox uses a remote-mounted compressor and condenser that installs on the underside of your Sprinter. It's IP68 rated — water and dust resistant — and designed to handle road debris. Does this fit my Ford Transit or Ram ProMaster?
The Sandy Vans overhead shelf kit is currently designed for the Mercedes Sprinter High Roof. The Cruise-n-Comfort VES Icebox system itself is vehicle-agnostic and installs in many platforms.
