Product Details

Van life is amazing — until a mosquito at 2am reminds you the slider door was open. The Sandy Vans Bug Screen fixes that permanently.

We designed this screen specifically for the Mercedes Sprinter slider door opening and have continued improving it based on real builder feedback. The latest version includes a velcro patch that works with both the electric door handle (found on newer Sprinters) and older standard-style handles — so regardless of which van you’re building, you’re covered.

The micro-mesh is fine enough to block gnats and mosquitoes but transparent enough that you’ll barely notice it’s there. Choose the Side Magnet variant if you prefer your closure at the edge of the door opening, or Middle Magnet if you’d rather it meet in the center. Both include the full hardware kit and the same high-quality mesh.

No drilling. No permanent modifications. Just clip it in, trim to fit, and enjoy bug-free nights with the door open.

Drilling RequiredNo

The slider door bug screen clips onto the metal flange under your factory weather seal. No drilling, no modifications. Plan on 2 to 3 hours, and a small step ladder helps.

Step by step

  1. Unbox the screen, the two clip sizes, pry tools and clamps
  2. Pull the weather seal off the top and sides of the slider opening (the bottom can stay on)
  3. Hang the screen with the Sandy Vans logo facing out, clamping the two top corners
  4. Set the bottom about 1 inch above the fiberglass factory step, level side to side
  5. Check for a little slack on both sides so the magnets can fall together when the door closes
  6. Clip the top first, about every 4 to 6 inches, with three clips around each curved corner
  7. Clip down the sides, leaving slack in the middle. Add extra wide clips at the corners and the front edge, which gets the most use
  8. Close and open the door to check that the magnets meet cleanly
  9. Trim the excess screen right behind the clips
  10. Reinstall the weather seal from the bottom up, pulling it straight and knocking it in with the mallet

Two clip sizes

Use the thinner clips where the frame is a single layer of metal and the wider clips where it's two layers. The flange changes as you go around the opening.

Door latch and electric doors

This screen fits every 2007+ high roof Sprinter slider, including 2025+ vans with the electric latch or electric assist door. The split in the middle of the screen closes with magnets. At the door latch, stick on the included Velcro patch so the screen seals around the latch and pulls free when you open the door.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Pulling the screen tight. The magnets need slack to fall together when the door closes.
  • Setting it too low. Keep the bottom about an inch above the fiberglass step.
  • Leaving extra mesh past the clips. Trim it flush. Fabric that runs past the weather seal wicks water into the van.
  • Skimping on corner clips. Corners and the front edge take the most pulling, so double them up.

When you're not using it, unzip, roll the screen up and buckle it out of the way.

Tools You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Rubber mallet
  • Clamps (included)
  • Small step ladder

Choosing a Bug Screen: What Actually Matters

There are dozens of van bug screens out there and most look identical in photos. The differences show up in daily use. Here are the decisions that matter, in order.

1. Magnet Position: Side or Middle?

This is our most common question, and almost nobody thinks about it before buying. Middle magnet parts in the center like curtains — symmetrical and intuitive, but you push through fabric on both sides. Side magnet puts the seam toward one edge so one large panel swings clear, more like a real door.

How to choose: look at what is directly inside your slider. If there is a counter, fridge, or cabinet on one side, go Side Magnet and put the seam on the open side so your walkway is not fighting the closure. If your slider opens into clear floor space, Middle Magnet feels more natural to most people.

2. Permanent Mount or Put It Up Every Stop?

Removable magnetic screens stick to bare metal and pack into a bag. Fast to deploy, but they only grip where metal is exposed, rarely seal at the bottom, and realistically you stop bothering after a few nights.

Permanently mounted screens clip into the weather stripping and stay put, rolling up out of the way when you want the door clear. Install once, then never think about it again. If you sleep in your van more than a couple weeks a year, go permanent. Ours is a permanent mount that rolls up.

3. How It Attaches (This Is Your Wind Performance)

Magnet-to-body screens rely on magnet strength against sheet metal. Fine in still air, but in a strong crosswind they billow, break contact, and let bugs in. This is the single most common complaint about generic screens in van forums.

Weather-strip clip mounting tucks the screen edge behind the door gasket and captures it mechanically with metal clips. The screen becomes part of the door opening instead of something stuck to it. Look for a kit with at least two clip sizes — the metal thickness around a Sprinter door frame changes as you work around the opening, and some spots have two layers sandwiched together. Ours includes both sizes.

4. Mesh Fineness

Standard window screen (roughly 18x16 strands per inch) stops houseflies and mosquitoes but not the small stuff. No-see-um rated mesh is 20x20 or finer, which is the threshold for biting midges (1 to 3mm) and most gnats (2 to 5mm). If you camp coastal, in the Southeast, near marshland, or the Pacific Northwest in summer, you want the finer weave. Also ask whether the mesh is transparent or opaque — transparent micro-mesh keeps your view; some budget screens use mesh dark enough that you feel closed in.

5. Door Handle Compatibility

2025+ Sprinters have an electric assist door with a button or electric latch instead of the older mechanical handle. That hardware sits differently, and a screen built around the old handle will not clear it. Ask directly whether a screen fits the electric latch. Also watch how they solved it: velcro running the full length of an edge will drag across your mesh and snag it over a season. A small velcro patch at the handle location only avoids that entirely, which is the approach we use.

6. Van-Specific vs. Universal Sizing

Universal screens are cut oversized and leave the pattern-making to you. A van-specific cut sits flat and seals at the edges. Confirm High Roof vs. Low Roof before ordering — these are different openings and a High Roof screen will not fit a Low Roof van. Also check whether your interior trim covers the door frame, since clip-mount screens need access to the metal lip.

Quick Pre-Order Checklist

  • High Roof or Low Roof? (This screen is High Roof only)
  • Electric latch door or older mechanical handle? (This screen fits both)
  • Magnet seam in the middle or off to one side?
  • Is your door frame accessible, or is it covered by finished interior panels?
  • Installing yourself, or booking a pro install?

Does this bug screen work with the electric door handle on 2025+ Sprinters?
Yes — 2025+ Sprinters with the electric assist door (button or electric latch) are fully supported. The kit includes a velcro patch that you install at the handle location before mounting the screen, so it sits flat and closes cleanly regardless of which handle style your van has. Older standard-handle Sprinters (2007–2024) just skip the velcro patch and install as normal.
What is the difference between Side Magnet and Middle Magnet?
Both variants use the same high-quality micro-mesh and include identical hardware — the only difference is where the magnetic seam falls. Side Magnet closes at the edge of the door opening; Middle Magnet closes in the center. It comes down to personal preference for how you enter and exit the van.
Will this fit my Low Roof Sprinter?
No — this screen is designed for the High Roof Sprinter slider door only (2007 and up). The opening dimensions on Low Roof models are different and the screen will not fit correctly. If you have questions about your specific van, reach out to us at products@sandyvans.com.
Do I need to drill any holes to install this?
No drilling required. The screen installs using the included metal clips and clamps that attach to the existing weather stripping and metal edge of the slider door frame. No permanent modifications to your van are needed.

Sandy Vans' personal focus on customer service puts them above and beyond all the other van upfitters and accessory providers we have dealt with on our . We ordered a slider bug screen and it wasn't quite up to par, and a phone call to Sandy Vans was all it took for them to overnight the correct item to us, which worked perfectly. Shout out to Brian, one of the founders, who ensured us that he'll make it right, and he delivered. Not everything always goes perfectly anywhere, and the companies that stand out are the ones who place customer satisfaction as a priority and are the ones that will get repeat business and generate great word-of-mouth. I would recommend Sandy Vans to all my van friends and am now perusing their website now for other goodies we may need....

I'm very happy with my new Sandy Vans bug screen. The install was fairly simple, instructions were good, and the function of the new screen is much better than my old one. I especially like a feature not talked about much in the description. Sandy includes a padded roll at the bottom that not only helps the seal, but also allows it to be easier to roll up and clip at the top - a very nice touch.

"I installed this sliding door screen on my NCV3 Sprinter van conversion, and the design flexibility is unmatched. If you have a custom kitchen galley cabinet that partially blocks the front edge of your sliding door opening, standard center-split magnetic screens are completely useless. Being able to choose an offset magnetic entry shifted 14 inches toward the front means I can easily squeeze in and out without fighting the mesh or my cabinetry. The durability of the marine-grade canvas borders and the fine No-See-Um mesh is exceptional. It creates a 100% complete, edge-to-edge bug seal under the factory rubber door weatherstripping. Another massive plus is the top zipper system. When winter rolls around or when I'm traveling through regions without bugs, I can unzip the mesh roll entirely and store it away so nothing is hanging down in my doorway. It is absolutely worth the investment for a serious build."

Amazing!

Much needed for the buggy weather in montana. Holding up well, even to a toddler who uses the edges as a handle to climb into the van.

Side note for the folks packing/mailing products: the big clips that were sent for install were incorrect (plastic buckles), not the metal ones. Not a big deal, just used pliers on the small clips to make then bigger

The Sprinter Sliding Door by SandyVans was excellent

The material, construction, and supporting DIY videos were excellent. The biggest decision is to have a center v.s. offset magnetic strip, and that is a decision you have to make. I chose the offset right based upon side-steps and sprinter handle placement. What took the longest? figuring out how to place the rubber seal back on the frame so it all fits properly. Like any project, it will take you twice as long to do and complete. No concerns with the quality and accessories that come with the product.

Great solid quality!

i’m so happy I didn’t let my engineering fiancé get netting and do some makeshift thing. These screens look like they will really be rugged, tough and long lasting.- well worth the money. And you must say your customer service has been awesome. Jeff made a call to confirm some installation challenges he was having and your customer service was extremely helpful. Proud to know you are right next-door here in San Diego. Looking forward to more product options one item in particular that we are looking for our Velcro window shades for the body of the van not just the front windshield, driver, and passenger windows. please let me know if you produce these things.. aloha until next time

I received theSandy Vans Side door Bug Screen for Sprinter after a shipping delay. The folks at at Sandy called me and provided an update on delivery after I had made an online inquiry.
The bug screen seems to be of good quality and arrived with a storage bag,2 clamps and clips of 2 sizes. A YouTube video showing back door screen installation is available online but not for the side door which is more difficult. I strongly recommend a video and/or written instructions for side door installation be available for purchasers.

Great service!

My big screen looks… just like the pictures. I am happy with the results. If you are doing this for the first time, get a friend and set aside 2 hours. If you get done early, you have earned some bonus time. Have a beer! But don’t expect this to be a breeze and keep your head when it becomes a little frustrating. Leave some slack when you’re clipping the sides to the frame. The replacement of the weather moulding will tighten the screen up. You’ll want the magnets to maintain contact with the weather mounding in place. If you set it up too tightly before replacing the weather moulding, the magnets will separate. You’ll have to redo one side or both to keep it loose enough that the magnets will connect and close the screen up. You also want it to look nice and straight, which will be easier if the screen has enough slack in it. Don’t be shy though, if I can do it by myself, you and a buddy can surely get it done and you will be pleased with the result. A video is coming out by mid September, but you should be able to handle it without the video. I’d like to see that video, though! 🤪
