Lighting that looks built in

Exposed LED tape looks like an afterthought. Sunset LED strips are diffused and sit inside a routed channel, so you see a clean line of light instead of a row of dots. It's the same strip in our ceilings, cabinet edges and toe kicks.

Flexible enough to follow curves

The strip bends to follow curved cabinet edges and swooping ceiling lines. At 5 mm wide and 11 mm deep (10 mm plus a 1 mm rounded light face), it drops into a quarter-inch channel.

Pick a color, or mix them

Warm White is our go-to for ceilings. Blue, Green, Purple and Pink are great accents under cabinets and along the floor. Lots of our builds run warm white overhead with a color accent below.

12V and dimmable

The strips run on 12V and are dimmable, so you can go from full working light to a low evening glow.

What's in the Box

  • Sunset LED strip, 16.4 ft (5 m) reel
Install Time2 to 30 hours
DIY FriendlyYes, with woodworking and soldering skills
Drilling RequiredRouting a channel is recommended

This is a woodworking and wiring project. Plan on anywhere from a couple of hours for one simple run to a few days for a full ceiling and cabinet layout. There's no printed manual; our builder's walkthrough covers the process below.

How we build light features

  • Route a channel a quarter inch wide. Depth of half an inch to three quarters of an inch sets how much light you get.
  • Glue the strip into the channel with a clear, silicone-based adhesive. It won't let go when the lights get warm or when the strip is hanging upside down in a ceiling.
  • Remove the bulky end connector if you want a flush finish.
  • Cut only at the marked cut lines. Cutting the back end keeps the factory wiring on the front end.
  • To reconnect a cut piece, cut the silicone along the top to expose the terminals. Positive is at the light side, negative at the back. Solder 18 gauge wire on with flux, then cover the terminals with glue so the strip can't tear.
  • Wire multiple runs in parallel: red to red, black to black.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Routing the channel too shallow. A deeper channel gives a softer, more diffused glow.
  • Gluing over a cut that isn't at a cut line. That section won't light.
  • Relying on the strip itself as strain relief. The inside is thin and tears easily, so glue over every soldered joint.
  • Soldering for the first time on your build. Practice on a scrap piece first.

Tools You'll Need

  • Router
  • Clear silicone-based adhesive
  • Soldering iron, solder and flux
  • 18 gauge wire
  • Masking tape
  • Wire cutters and strippers

How to choose LED strip lighting for your van

Here's what customers ask, in order.

1. Will it work with your electrical system?

Sunset LED strips run on 12V, the standard for van and RV house systems.

How to choose: 12V house battery: plug and play. Anything else: talk to us first.

2. Exposed tape or diffused strip?

Basic LED tape shows individual dots. A diffused strip in a channel reads as one smooth line.

How to choose: If the lights will be visible, pick a diffused strip and recess it.

3. What color?

Warm White lights the space. Colors set the mood.

How to choose: Ceilings and work areas: Warm White. Toe kicks and accents: Blue, Green, Purple or Pink.

4. How much do you need?

Each reel is 16.4 ft (5 m) and cuts at the marked lines.

How to choose: Add up every run, round up, and order one reel for each 16.4 ft.

5. Do you want it dimmable?

Dimming lets one light work for cooking and for winding down.

How to choose: Plan a 12V dimmer into your wiring. The strips are dimmable.

Before you order

  • Measure every run you want to light
  • Pick your colors
  • Plan your channel depth and wiring route
  • Line up a router, soldering iron and clear silicone-based adhesive

How Sunset LED stacks up

  • Look: diffused, flexible strip made to recess
  • Power: 12V and dimmable
  • Proven: the same strip in our own builds
Are these dimmable?
Yes. They're 12V and dimmable. Reach out if you want help picking a dimmer for your system.
Can I cut the strip?
Yes, at the marked cut lines. Cut the back end so the front keeps its factory wiring, then solder on 18 gauge wire for any extra pieces.
How long is a reel?
16.4 ft (5 m).
Which color is in most of your photos?
Warm White. That's what we put in most of our ceilings.
What glue should I use?
A clear, silicone-based adhesive. It's clean, holds upside down, and doesn't let go when the lights get warm.
How deep should the channel be?
A quarter inch wide and half an inch to three quarters of an inch deep. Deeper channels give a softer glow.
