Sleep sideways. Get your floor back.

The Sprinter's curved factory walls keep the interior too narrow for most adults to sleep across the van, so beds end up running front to back or on a diagonal. These bump-out capsules push both side walls outward and widen the interior to about 79.5 inches, enough for people 6'3" to 6'6" to sleep east to west. That frees the length of your van for a garage, seating or a bigger galley. They're gel-coated fiberglass, CAD-designed and made in California, with a molded rain channel and an aerodynamic shape that follows the Sprinter body lines.

Installing capsules means cutting your van's factory side body panel. This is a permanent structural modification. If you have not done metal fabrication before, have a pro install them.

Fits: 2007+ Mercedes Sprinter 144" and 170" (including 170" EXT), all drivetrains.
Not compatible: Sprinter 170 capsules do not work with the middle factory side window. Ford Transit and other vans.

  • About 6.5" more width on the driver side and about 5" on the passenger side, about 11.5" total
  • Up to 10" more head-to-toe sleeping room across the van
  • Gel-coated fiberglass with a built-in rain channel
  • Bonds and bolts on with the included urethane and hardware
  • Optional 10" x 33" sliding bunk windows
  • Textured black or unpainted, ready to prep, prime and paint

Choose your variant:

  • Set-up: Sprinter 144" Capsules, Sprinter 144" Windowless Capsules, or Sprinter 170" Capsules
  • Windows: with or without bunk windows (windowless capsules come without)
  • Textured lining: Yes - Black (textured black capsule) or No - Unpainted (gel coat, paint to match)

Finish the inside with our Capsule Trim Rings and the 10x33 Bunk Window Trim Ring with Storage Cubbies. We install capsules at our San Diego shop, reach out for a quote.

Product Details

More room without a bigger van

A stock Sprinter's walls curve inward as they rise, which narrows the space at bed height. Most adults end up sleeping north to south or on a diagonal, and the bed takes over the back of the van. Capsules push both side walls out so you get true horizontal sleeping space across the van.

How much room you gain

  • Driver side: about 6.5 inches
  • Passenger side: about 5 inches
  • Together: about 11.5 inches of width
  • Interior width: up to about 79.5 inches
  • Sleeping length across the van: up to 10 inches more, enough for people 6'3" to 6'6"

With an interior trim kit installed, the gain is a little less: about 5.75 inches on the driver side and about 4.5 inches on the passenger side, about 10.25 inches total.

Built for the Sprinter

The capsules are gel-coated fiberglass, designed in CAD for a precise fit and made in California. A rain channel is molded into the top and sides so water runs off instead of sitting on the seam. The aerodynamic shape follows the Sprinter body lines, so it looks like it belongs on the van. The capsules do change the side profile of your van.

Bunk windows, or none at all

Order your capsules with 10" x 33" sliding bunk windows for light and airflow at the bed, or without them. The 144 also comes in a windowless version for a clean, solid side wall.

Finish to match

Pick textured black capsules, or unpainted gel coat you prep, prime and paint to match your van. Inside, the expansion area can be insulated and finished like the rest of your walls. Add Capsule Trim Rings for a clean interior edge.

Capsule install means cutting the factory body panel. It is a permanent structural change, rated 6 out of 10 for difficulty, experience recommended. If you have not done metal fabrication, have a pro do it.

Each capsule bonds to the van with urethane and is fastened with the supplied hardware for mechanical hold, about six bolts per pair. Because the bolts hold the capsule while the urethane cures, you can drive once everything is tight instead of waiting a day or two. Detailed fitment, cutting, mounting and hardware instructions come in the box. There is no install video on this page yet.

After install, insulate and finish the expansion area like the rest of your walls. We install capsules at our San Diego shop. Reach out for a quote.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping primer on cut edges. Prime every cut edge of the body panel right away to stop rust.
  • Forgetting primer. Primer is not in the box, so have it on hand before you cut.
  • Sanding the whole flange. Only scuff the bonding area, about 1.5 inches in from your trace line, on both the capsule and the van.
  • Uneven urethane. Lay one continuous bead with a V-cut tip, and join the ends cleanly if you switch tubes.
  • Skipping a gel coat check. Look the capsule over and fill any small surface pits before you paint.
  • Ordering a 170 capsule for a van that keeps its middle factory side window. They do not work together.

Tools You'll Need

  • Air saw
  • Drill with a 3/8 in bit
  • Angle grinder or sanding block
  • 220 grit sandpaper
  • Caulking gun
  • Primer
  • Allen key and open-end wrench or socket
  • Dry erase marker
  • Masking tape and protective paper

How to choose Sprinter capsules

Here's what customers ask, in order.

1. Which Sprinter do you have?

Capsules fit 2007+ Mercedes Sprinter 144" and 170", including the 170" EXT.

How to choose: 144: order Sprinter 144" Capsules or Sprinter 144" Windowless Capsules. 170 or 170 EXT: order Sprinter 170" Capsules.

2. Are you keeping the middle factory window? (170 only)

Sprinter 170 capsules do not work with the middle factory side window.

How to choose: Keeping that window: reach out before you order. No middle window: you are good.

3. How tall are the people sleeping across the van?

With capsules, interior width reaches about 79.5 inches, which fits sleepers 6'3" to 6'6" east to west. An interior trim kit takes back about an inch and a quarter.

How to choose: Sleepers up to 6'6": capsules make sideways sleeping work. Taller: plan a north to south bed.

4. Bunk windows or not?

Bunk windows are 10" x 33" sliders that bring light and air to the bed. You can order capsules with or without them. The 144 also comes windowless.

How to choose: Want airflow at the bed: with bunk windows. Want a solid wall: without, or 144" Windowless.

5. Black or paint to match?

Textured Lining Yes - Black is a textured black capsule. No - Unpainted is gel coat you prep, prime and paint to match your van.

How to choose: Black trim look or no paint shop: Yes - Black. Matching body color: No - Unpainted.

6. DIY or pro install?

Install means cutting the body panel and bonding the capsule on. It is rated 6 out of 10.

How to choose: Metal fab experience: DIY with the included instructions. Otherwise: reach out and we will install them.

Before you order

  • Confirm your wheelbase: 144, 170 or 170 EXT
  • On a 170, check your middle factory side window
  • Decide on bunk windows
  • Pick textured black or unpainted
  • Have primer on hand
  • Plan your install: DIY or our shop
  • Add trim rings for the interior edge

How these capsules stack up

  • Width: about 11.5 inches more across the van, up to about 79.5 inches inside.
  • Build: gel-coated fiberglass, CAD-designed, made in California, molded rain channel.
  • Install: urethane plus bolts, so no long cure wait before driving.
  • Options: bunk windows, windowless 144, textured black or unpainted.
  • Interior finish: Capsule Trim Rings and a bunk window trim ring with storage cubbies.
